The Wild Auckland trails series is a series of trail run or walk events that aims to introduce people to regional parks around the Auckland region that they might not have visited before. Now is a great time to explore new trails while the Waitakere Ranges and other parks are closed due to Kauri Dieback.
Relying on their key value of “professionalism in jandals”, Lactic Turkey Events presents a series of events that are achievable, approachable, not overly—competitive (unless you want it to be), affordable and fun for all levels of fitness and experience.
From the Kids Dash (2-3km) to the Expedition (long course) 18-25km there is a distance option for everyone.
As part of the last event we offer a 50km Ultra distance along the famous Hillary Trail – effectively a half Hillary! From Huia to Piha with some extra bits 😀
So put on your adventurer shoes and join us to explore new areas, to stretch the legs and to treat the eyes to sweet views and scenery!
State Of Play Beer which is a 100% zero* alcohol beer, that tastes like beer should — full of flavour!
* contains less than 0.5% alcohol by volume which is less alcohol than orange juice, a ripe banana or sour dough bread

The series discounted price to include the Ultra for the last event instead of the Expedition course is $210.
THE COURSES
The courses will be released on the week of the event (usually the Monday evening) and the final details email will be sent to all participants by at least the Wednesday in the week of the event. This is to ensure the first time mystery and adventure of the courses rather than have people pre-run them – to keep the exploring feel of these events.
Courses will be clearly marked with course marking and marshals where necessary.
There will be water stations on all courses except the Kids Dash.
50km Ultra
Although we don’t release course details for our Wild Auckland events until the week of the event, to maintain a level of adventure and exploring, 50km requires a bit of training, so here is some basic information to help you plan.
- Distance: 50km
- Vert Climb: approx 2050m 😲
- Timetable: As per the Timetable section on this page below. Start 7am.
- Cut-offs: We want to get as many people to finish the ultra as possible but also can’t have our marshals out there all day so will have cut-offs in place to ensure everyone is finished in approx 9 hours. Therefore you may not pass the event base at Piha (approx 35km), to do the Anawhata section after 1:30pm noon (6.5hrs).
- Aid Stations: There will be aid stations at 11km Whatipu (basic), 21km Karekare (full sha-boodle) and 35km Piha (full sha-boodle). Because this is a casual low key ultra as part if our Wild Auckland series (and hence lower priced), we won’t be having a huge smorgasbord of food and drink like you’d expect at premium ultras. We’ll likely have water/tailwind/jet planes, gingernut cookies and chips.
- Start Location: The start is at the Karamatura carpark.
- Finish Location: The finish is the same as all the other courses, at the Piha Domain.
- Transport from your car at the Finish to the Start: You’ll need to sort this out – carpooling.
- Compulsory Gear: whistle, wind and waterproof seam sealed jacket, thermal hat/Thir, at least 1 litre of fluid, some food, a survival blanket, a charged mobile phone and a first aid kit.

COMPULSORY GEAR
For this series of events, due to the nature of the courses we do not insist on any compulsory gear. However we recommend the longer course participants take the basics as it’s good practice to carry this type of gear anytime you hit the trails!
We recommend the following: Whistle, wind and waterproof seam sealed jacket, thermal hat/Thir, at least 1 litre of fluid, a survival blanket, a mobile phone and a first aid kit. For the last events 50km Ultra, this list will be compulsory.
You will also need your reusable cup as we will not have paper cups at aid stations – these are provided free, at registration if this is your first Wild Auckland or can be purchased for $4.
REUSABLE CUPS
Lactic Turkey Events tries to do our bit for the environment and we’ve been #paperplasticcupfree for our trail runs for years now. We use a 220ml foldable/crushable reusable cup as per below.
Thanks to IronOak Financial Services, everyone will get one of these free for their first event, to use at our events or any other event that is cupless!
If you lose your cup for some reason then you can purchase replacements for $4. These can be purchased at our online store HERE.
There will not be any paper/plastic cups at the aid stations throughout the day or at the finish line, so you will need to take this on the run with you to use.
MERCHANDISE
We have event trucker caps and our Lactic Turkey first aid kits for sale as part of the entry process or our online store HERE.
$20 – Trucker 5-panel Mesh Caps
We wear these caps ourselves and no matter if its a formal cap for wearing out and about or your running cap, these things look good and are quality.
$20 – Lactic Turkey Custom Survival Compact First Aid Kit
This is put together to meet the standards for most event compulsory gear requirements.
This contains: Alcohol wipes, antiseptic wipes, non-adherent dressing, plasters, plaster fabric strip, safety pins, scissors, a survival blanket, tri-angular banadage and a lactic turkey emergency whistle.
All contained in a resealable waterproof bag measuring 14x8x2cm
DO YOUR BIT FOR KAURI DIEBACK
The idea of the Wild Auckland series is to introduce you to new parks and trails now that the Waitakere Ranges and increasingly more parks close due to Kauri Dieback. The parks we take you to may not be closed but best practise dictates that we use the same principles of Kauri Dieback management in all regional parks.
We continue to work with the Auckland Council to ensure that we mitigate the risk of the event spreading Kauri dieback. Through these measures and education of participants and supporters we ensure that we are using best practice to minimise the risk of spreading the disease that is affecting New Zealand’s greatest and most majestic native trees.
The event also aims to help raise awareness of the Kauri dieback issue to the wider public.
Please ensure you read all the information on Kauri dieback here which outlines what the issue is and what you can do – whether part of the event or in your training. Lets all help raise awareness of the issue!
